MEng Accreditation for UCC's BEng Process & Chemical Engineering Degree by IChemE
The BEng degree in Process and Chemical Engineering at UCC has been
awarded accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers of the
UK at MEng level. This gives UCC international recognition as a
provider of undergraduate education of world class level in the field
of chemical engineering. The award has been given in full for the
maximum period of accreditation, up to 2009, and IChemE also granted
retrospective effect to all graduates of this degree from its first
cohort, which graduated in 2005. It comes in the sequence of a highly
complimentary report in 2005 and a subsequent review of the final year
Design Projects in 2006, with further commendation of the effort made
by UCC to provide high quality education in this the innovative nature
of the degree, in targeting the areas of chemical engineering of
greater relevance in the Cork and Irish contexts, with emphasis on
Pharmaceutical and Food Industry processes.
The stream offered by UCC with electives in the Pharmaceutical
Engineering area has been particularly attractive to Leaving
Certificate applicants, resulting in one of the highest CAO cut-off
points of all engineering degrees in Ireland. This strong interest is
set to continue with the expansion of the biopharmaceutical sector,
with the degree being already suited to deliver chemical engineering
graduates with a strong starting point to develop their careers in this
sector. The degree offers two other choices of focus, one targeted at
the Food Industry, an equally very important employer in Ireland and
worldwide, and another in Supply Chain Engineering and Management,
which provides a greater incorporation of management and business
organisation topics.
This accreditation facilitates the registration of UCC graduates as
internationally recognised chemical engineer professionals, to
eventually reach Chartered Engineer status.
The degree with the Food Industry set of electives is also accredited
by Engineers Ireland (former Institution of Engineers of Ireland), and
the Department of Process and Chemical Engineering intends to continue
this year with the accreditation process for the other two streams by
EI.
