Earnshaw Prize for UCC Graduate
20.08.2007

Each year the Institute of Physics in Ireland (IoPI) awards the Earnshaw Prize to the undergraduate student who presents the best final year physics project in Irish third level institutions.
Deirdre O'Leary is the recipient of the 2006 Earnshaw Prize.  Deirdre, a native of Clonakilty, Co. Cork, carried out her project titled "Experimental investigation of transport in a xenon plasma using Langmuir probes" under the supervision of Dr Patrick McCarthy of UCC's Physics Department with valuable assistance from Professor Richard Armstrong.  The project work was carried out on a Double Plasma device at the Department of Physics, UCC.

At a reception in UCC, Deirdre was presented with a cheque by Dr Denise Gabuzda, IoPI representative in UCC.  Also in attendance was Professor Mike Mansfield, member of the IoPI Education Group.

Before coming to UCC, Deirdre attended St Joseph's National School and Sacred Heart Secondary School in Clonakilty. While studying for the Leaving Certificate, she realised she had developed an aptitude for mathematics and science, particularly physics. After some thought on the subject, Deirdre applied for and was admitted into the Physics and Astrophysics degree programme at UCC.  On completion of her BSc, she decided to take a break from academic pursuits and took the opportunity to gain some work experience. She is moving to London shortly with a view to gaining further work experience before ultimately deciding on an area of research in which to continue her studies in physics.
