Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner to visit UCC

Mr Thomas Hammarberg, Human Rights Commissioner for the Council of Europe, will visit UCC's Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (CCJHR), Faculty of Law on Wednesday, November 28th.
Mr Hammarberg will meet with staff of the Centre and representatives of the legal profession in Cork.
 
Commenting on the visit, Dr Siobhan Mullally, Co-Director of the CCJHR said: "We are delighted to welcome the Commissioner to Cork. UCC is the only University that the Commissioner will visit during his stay in Ireland and reflects the growing international reputation of the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights and our continuing engagement with human rights policy and practice in Ireland."
 
The visit forms part of a one-week country visit to assess the human rights situation in Ireland. Children's rights, juvenile justice and migrants' rights as well as measures against discrimination will be some of the main topics that the Commissioner will assess during his five-day high-level official visit to Ireland which began today (Monday, November 26th).
 
The Commissioner will present his preliminary observations on Friday,  November 30th during a press conference in Dublin.  The visit is part of the activities carried out in accordance with the Commissioner's mandate to assess the implementation of human rights commitments by all Council of Europe's member States. An assessment report with relevant recommendations will be published in early 2008.
