University College Cork (UCC) Launches Wireless Internet Access for Students

UCC students are set to benefit from the latest in computer technology with the launch of its wireless internet access scheme. With millions around the world using the Internet to communicate with others, make travel plans, conduct business, shop and learn, dependency on electronic communication over the Internet has become a way of life. Wireless internet access allows 'Internet on the go'. By registering their personal laptops or palmtop devices with the UCC Computer Centre, students can avail of wireless internet access from many locations on campus.

Martin Hayes, Director of UCC's Computer Centre commented "It gives me great pleasure to launch the wireless network here at UCC. This marks a further development of the ICT services for our students. The wireless network provides additional facilities for accessing the web and email and allows greater flexibility. For example, many lecturers in UCC are now putting material for their courses on the web and through the wireless network students will be able to access this material more conveniently using their own laptops" said Mr Hayes.

The launch of the wireless network coincides with a new student laptop purchase scheme arranged by UCC with Dell, Apple and PFH, allowing students to purchase laptop computers at discounted educational rates. "UCC is committed to providing a quality educational experience for all its students, and these schemes form a very important part of our education strategy" said Mr Hayes.
