Launch of UCC/AIB Visa Affinity Credit Card

University College Cork (UCC) and AIB have teamed up to launch a UCC/AIB Visa Affinity Credit Card. Aimed at graduates, the UCC/AIB Visa Card will raise valuable funds for the UCC Alumni Heritage Fund, at no cost to the cardholder.

UCC graduates are the university's greatest ambassadors and UCC has a vibrant Graduates' Association. The Graduates' Association aims to maintain a strong connection between graduates and their alma mater throughout their lifetime and provides many opportunities for graduates to network with each other in Ireland and around the globe. UCC takes tremendous pride in the achievements of its graduates, no matter their chosen walk of life; and recently celebrated the 2004 UCC Alumni Achievement Awards, recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of outstanding alumni across all faculties.

According to Caroline Waters, UCC's Alumni Officer "The launch of the Visa Card, which includes a depiction of the university's celebrated quadrangle presents the opportunity for graduates to ensure the preservation of the university's rich architectural heritage for future generations of students including the Aula Maxima, the Ogham Stones and the Crawford Observatory" said Ms Waters.

Guest speaker at the launch was UCC 1979 Engineering graduate, John Bowen, Chairman, The Bowen Group. Mr Bowen, who has made a long study of the history of Cork silver and those who made it, gave an illustrated talk on Cork's renowned tradition of fine craftsmanship in silver and gold in anticipation of a major exhibition - 'Airgeadoir; four centuries of Cork silver and gold' - to be held in the Crawford Art Gallery during the 2005 European Capital of Culture Celebrations. The UCC Mace, the symbol of authority of the university, dates back to 1910, was on display on the Evening and is itself a fine example of this tradition of craftsmanship in silver.

Over 130 graduates attended the Launch on 7 December 2004 in the magnificent Banking Hall at AIB South Mall Cork. UCC/AIB Visa Card Application Forms, can be obtained directly from the Alumni Office, University College Cork, Tel. 021 4902040.
