Presentation of Sports Awards at University College Cork (UCC)


UCC will honour its sporting achievements at a presentation of awards to its students and clubs today (6 December 2004). Forty four students will be honoured with 38 receiving a Sports Scholarship and six receiving a Munster GAA Bursary. Forty-two Sports Clubs will be awarded sponsorship cheques by the Bank of Ireland.

Amongst those who are being honoured this year are Tom Kenny, Cork All-Ireland winner; Tommy Walsh, Kilkenny All Star; Jill Horan, Tipperary All-Ireland Camogie winner and Ladies Football Association of Ireland Intermediate Cup winner with Wilton Utd Ladies Soccer Club, and Gillian O'Leary, Golf, winner of Portuguese Open.

Christine O'Donovan, Acting Director of Physical Education & Sports said "UCC's sporting success is reflected amongst these students who have excelled in their chosen sport. The Sports Scholarship Scheme plays a significant part in ensuring UCC's continuing success" said Ms O'Donovan.

Previous award winners include Sarah Kelleher and Rachel Kohler (Ladies Hockey), Seamus Moynihan (Gaelic Football), Tom Kenny, Tommy Walsh, Frank Lohan and Joe Deane (Hurling), Gillian O'Sullivan (Athletics), Frankie Sheahan, Michael O'Driscoll and Peter Stringer (Rugby), Eugene Coakley (Rowing), Una O'Dwyer, Una O'Donoghue, Eimear McDonnell (Camogie).

Each Scholarship is valued at ?2000. The following companies contribute to the Scheme:
Department of Physical Education & Sport UCC; Munster Council GAA; Football Association of Ireland; UCC Athletic Union; Bank of Ireland; O?Flynn Construction; Micromail.

Organised by UCC's Department of Physical Education & Sport the Presentation of Scholarships will take place today (6 December 2004), at 6pm in the Multifunctional Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn, UCC.
