Streets, Lanes and Squares in the Southside

Streets, Lanes and Squares in the Southside is a fascinating account of developments in Cork's Southside from the time of the monastic settlement of Saint Finbarr right up to the present day. This comprehensive study includes an extraordinarily wide range of social history topics from prostitution, working-class housing, and overcrowded graveyards to hangings and the IRA. All the traditional historic sites such as the bridges, Red Abbey and Saint Finbarr's South are visited in this entertaining read along with the street lanes and squares which are vital parts of the people's history in Cork.

Aspects of traditional history of the local area such as Christian, Viking, Medieval and Famine Cork are also dealt with in this exceptional book with many of the topics solely based on primary research and published for the first time.

The book is divided into three sections, each with its own easy walk and simple map. Walks are from Friars Walk to Sullivan's Quay, from South Gate Bridge to Deerpark CBS and in the Triangle within Tower Street, Barrack Street and Friar's Street. A fourth walk, Sites of IRA and RIC activities 1920-1923 is also included.

This research by Transition Year students from Deerpark CBS on St Patrick's Road in the Greenmount area of Cork City was produced under the guidance of History Teacher, Kieran O'Halloran and Computer Teacher, Aidan McNally. The book was a tribute to the research skills, enthusiasm and hard work of the young historians of Deerpark CBS said Mr O'Halloran.

The book was launched at University College Cork on Thursday, 2 December and is now available at Cork city bookshops. All proceeds will be used to support Primary and Post-Primary schools in the Christian Brothers network of schools in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Africa.

Deerpark CBS gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance of Bridging the Gap Project, UCC and AIB.
