UCC Computer Science Initiative in Programming for Secondary Schools

The Department of Computer Science at University College Cork (UCC) has
initiated a programme aimed at secondary school transition year students
from the Munster area, called "Munster Programming Training". The aim of the
programme is to offer special training in computer programming as preparation
for participation in the "All Irish Schools Programming Competition" which takes
place next May.

The Programme aims to achieve the following:
_ to give a short and basic introduction to computer programming.
_ to foster interest in computers by encouraging young students to learn
_ about programming at an early age.
_ to prepare them for programming competitions.
_ to deliver a programming competition for the Munster area.

According to Dr Sabin Tabirca, coordinator of the Programme, "we are proud to
mention that the Irish Programming Team won gold and silver medals at the last two International Programming Olympiads through Martin Orr, a secondary school student from Methodist College of Belfast. Through this initiative we hope that at least one student from the Munster area will be selected for the Irish Programming Team in the near future" said Dr Tabirca.

A series of 20 formal and practical lectures by lecturers from the Department of
Computer Science will be delivered over a period of 20 weeks each Saturday at
UCC. Two or more Transition Year students from invited schools were invited to
participate. Forty students from 11 schools have enrolled in the programme.
Selected students were required to show a genuine interest in computers and
mathematics. It is expected that these students will also represent their school in the Munster Programming Competition due to take place in early May.
