Schools Essay Competition Heightens History Awareness


As part of its ongoing links with students and teachers in second level UCC's History Department's Schools Liaison Committee organised an essay competition for schools in the Munster region.  Students in both the junior and leaving certificate cycle were invited to write an essay about local history.  Established in 2003, the competition has proved to be a resounding success with entrants from every county. Professor Dermot Keogh, Department of History, UCC who presented the prizes said "the high numbers of entrants in the first year of the competition reflects the continuing interest in History and augurs well for the future."

The Prize-giving Ceremony, to which students and parents were invited, took place at  UCC on Friday, 19 November.

Bank of Ireland sponsored the first prize of ?150 for each category whilst the Department of History, UCC sponsored the runner-up prizes.

The Winners were:
Senior Cycle winner: Shane Walshe, Scoil Mhuire & Íde, Newcastle West, Co Limerick
Senior Cycle runner-up: Claire Carroll, Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co Cork
Junior Cycle joint prize winners: Simon Mac Aodhgáin, Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí Tobar, Mhaigh Dor, Trá Lí, Co Chiarraí
Susan O'Sullivan, Scoil Phobail Bheara, Baile Chaisléan Bhéara, Co Chorcaí
