IRISH UNIVERSITIES: The Case for Reform 24 - 25 November

Professor Michael Shattock, author of the OECD Review of Higher Education in Ireland is the keynote speaker at a 2-day conference Irish Universities: The Case for Reform taking place at University College Cork on 24 and 25 November next.

Professor Shattock's address "Reforming Irish Higher Education to Meet Irish Needs" on 25 November will be followed by Dr. Barry McSweeney, Chief Science Adviser to the Government, presenting 'Reflections on the Organisation and Development of Research Infrastructure in Ireland'. Dr Don Thornhill, Chair, Higher Education Authority (HEA) will speak on "Should Elephants Learn to Dance"' Mr Ewart Wooldridge, CBE will follow with a presentation on "Leadership and Change Management in a University Context".

A Questions and Answers Session will be chaired by Mr John Bowman and the panel will include Dr Garrett Fitzgerald, Chancellor NUI; Mr Tom Boland, Secretary/Chief Executive, HEA; Professor John Coolahan, Former Professor Education, NUIM, Professor Kathleen Lynch, Chair of Equality Studies, UCD. Professor Shattock will close the conference with a talk "Going Forward".

The Conference is organised by UCC's Human Resources Department in association with the Conference of Heads of Irish Universities (CHIU) and the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

A Human Resources Practitioners' Programme on Friday, 26 November starts with Dr Edmond S. Molloy who will speak on "The Role of Human Resources in facilitating Organisational Change" followed by parallel workshops on:

* Challenges and opportunities for the HR Practitioner

* Developing the developers

* Emerging best practice in Recruitment and Selection

* Sustaining Partnership

* The University and the Law.
