UCC researchers receive IRC funding
Documenting the lived experience of one parent families, an online programme delivered through music for young children with Down Syndrome and a project on pregnancy loss are among the 19 University College Cork (UCC) research community projects funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) today.
In total over €220,000 was awarded to UCC researchers through the IRC New Foundations funding scheme which brings researchers and community organisations together to collaborate on projects that will have a tangible impact on societal issues.
“These awards further recognise and support the importance of research as part of the wider community. The UCC projects awarded this funding impact across many societal issues from environment, health and humanities. Community and volunteer groups play such an important role in society now more than ever and these partnerships with UCC researchers will support and strengthen their impact across society” commented Professor John Cryan, Vice-President for Research & Innovation at UCC.

Since 2015, over 200 community, voluntary and charity organisations have engaged across the Irish Research Council’s suite of funding programmes. A total of 362 partnerships between civic society organisations and researchers have been supported, with an associated investment in excess of €9.9 million.
Commenting Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD said: “research partnerships with community and voluntary groups will have an invaluable impact – bringing new insights and evidence and allowing these organisations to have an even bigger impact on those they are trying to reach, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society.”
