Dr Tom Hulme is a Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at Queen’s University Belfast, where he has taught since 2016. He is interested in all aspects of Northern Ireland’s rich yet undervalued queer history, from everyday sexual experiences and identities to gay literature and politics. He is currently working on the history of male same-sex relationships in Belfast, and has written on this topic for both Gay Times and Irish Historical Studies. Working with Dr Leanne McCormick (Ulster University), the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland and the LGBT charity Cara Friend, he also runs an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project: Queer Northern Ireland: Sexuality Before Liberation. His past work includes: a monograph - After the Shock City: Urban Culture and the Making of Modern Citizenship (Boydell, 2019); an edited volume with Professor Simon Gunn - New Approaches to Governance and Rule in Urban Europe since 1500 (Routledge, 2020); and journal articles on topics like urban governance, historical re-enactment and architecture in journals such as Urban History, Journal of British Studies, Cultural and Social History, and English Historical Review.
