I am a historian of the Irish family, with a special focus on Presbyterian families in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries. My work emphasises the value that Presbyterian church records can bring to our understandings of Irish family life. While Presbyterians may have been a minority in Ireland across the period that I study, their records offer an invaluable insight into many aspects of Irish life more broadly.  Drawing on the Presbyterian archive, I have written about childhood and parenthood, growing up and adolescence, courtship and sex, the making and breaking of marriage, and marital relationships.
