Populism and the Rise of the Far Right

1 Dec 2025
Dr Naomi Mashheti (Cork Migrant Centre)

On 1 December, ISS21 hosted a panel discussion to explore the rise of the far right in Ireland and internationally.

Panellists: Dr Evelien Geerts (Department of Philosophy), Dr Naomi Mashheti (Cork Migrant Centre), Joe Moore (activist), Titaś Biswas (Researcher, School of Applied Social Studies). The event was chaired by Dr Amin Sharifi Isaloo, Department of Sociology and Criminology.
Populist and far-right movements have gained significant traction in recent decades. Their rise and activities reshape the political landscape, challenging the established order and leading to a decline in respect for human rights, equality, justice, and international norms. Consequently, the impact of their actions can be profound on individuals and communities. Considering that far-right ideologies and values are shared across EU borders and are increasingly perceived as a transnational threat, this panel explored the factors driving this phenomenon. The discussion looked at how far right and populist movements are effectively active in broadening their appeal and examined the potential long-term consequences for democracy and social cohesion.
