Outline

Module Objective: To integrate perspectives affecting hearing-related communication abilities in children and adults, to related disciplines in health and education, using evidence based research and best practice guidelines. 


Module Content: Hearing across the lifespan, in the context of development and adaptation within the following domains: communication, cognition, emotional and social skills.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Determine the stages of communicative, socio-emotional and cognitive development in children with and without hearing loss.
  • Evaluate from current research findings how a hearing loss can influence development in the areas of spoken language and literacy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of evidence-based assessments used to evaluate the languages of deaf children, including bilingual deaf children.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cognitive, social and educational challenges for children with and without hearing loss.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the effects of late-onset or acquired hearing loss on communication in children and adults.

Practicalities

This module is taking place 12th, 13th and 14th May 2022.

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 

50% Students must pass each of the components independently to pass this module. For students who do not satisfy this requirement, the overall mark achieved in the module and a 'Fail Special Requirement will be recorded. 

 

 

Requirements

As per Entry Requirements for MSc HBC CKX27 Part-time and also recognised prior clinical experience in diagnostic audiology.

  • Candidates will hold either an undergraduate honours degree (NFQ Level 8; minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 1) or a postgraduate degree, in any scientific or medical discipline, such as but not exclusively, Audiology, Anatomy, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Social Sciences, Speech and Language Therapy, Medicine, Nursing and Education.
  • In exceptional circumstances candidates without an honours degree may be recommended for entry to the programme after a review of their qualifications and experience by the programme lead. The admission of such candidates will be subject to the approval of the School of Clinical Therapies.
  • Applications will be reviewed on the basis of educational qualifications, relevant work experience and motivation.

Fees and Costs

• Non-EU Fee €2,050 for this 10 credit module.
• EU Fee €900 for this 10 credit module.

There is also a €35 application fee payable on-line.
