CPPU present work on behaviour change at NATO Advance Research Workshop, Vilnius LT
CPPU contributed to the recent NATO Advanced Research Workshop ‘Towards Energy Efficiency through Behaviour Change in the Military’, organised by NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence (NATO ENSEC COE) held in Vilnius, Lithuania 5-7 April 2016.
The aim of the workshop, which had attendees from a number of countries (including Lithuania, Estonia, UK, Ireland, Turkey, USA, Finland, Canada, Greece, Spain and France), was to examine means for improving military approaches to energy with a focus on enacting desired behavioural change.
CPPU's Niall Dunphy presented a paper entitled ‘Towards Energy Sustainability: active consumerism or energy citizenship’, which explored the role of both individuals and communities in the transition towards a low carbon future. Details of the ENTRUST project were presented reflecting its focus on the societal dimension of the energy system, and the concept of energy citizenship was introduced to the delegates.
A key theme of the talk was the complicated nature of human interaction with the energy system, the inherent complexity of human beings, and the consequential need to move beyond individual rationalist views towards more practice-based approaches that foster change in practices and behaviours.
