Community Week launches at UCC

Over 50 free public and community sector events are planned for Cork, as University College Cork (UCC) launches its inaugural Community Week.

Running from October 4th to 13^th, UCC Community Week is a programme of events, for all ages, co-created by UCC staff and students, together with community partners.

Among the events planned are:

• A series of short talks in Lapps Quay as UCC academics present their research in an accessible an engaging format. (UCC Centre for Executive Education, Lapps Quay: 8^th October, 5.30pm)

• A public conversation on the case for urgent climate action with Alicia-Joy O'Sullivan, Ireland's Young Ocean Ambassador, in an event hosted by UCC’s Centre for Law and the Environment in partnership with the Environmental Research Institute. (UCC Main Campus: 10^th October, 6.30pm)

• UCC takes its regular reading series out of the University and into the city, featuring two critically acclaimed poets, Zoe Brigley and Martin Dyar. (Cork City Library: 8^th October, 7pm)

• What we should eat – a public health view - discussion with Professor Ivan Perry (Western Gateway Building: 7^th October 2.30pm)

• An evening of oral history and folklore recordings of the Cork Folklore Project, focusing on the community memories documented by the group over many years. (UCC Main Campus: 9^th October, 7pm)

• RTE Brainstorm’s Jim Carroll will host a public roundtable on fostering inclusive communities in the Aula Maxima, UCC (Aula Maxima: 9^th October, 4pm)

• A lunchtime concert at the Glucksman by Citadel, a group of musicians from the Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre, who hail from 8 different countries. (Glucksman: 9^th October: 1pm)

• An insight into life in Mexico as the Mexican Ambassador, HE Mr Miguel Malfavón, opens the exhibition Entre Mundos/Between Worlds: Images of Life between Mexico and Ireland, at Cork City Library (Cork City Library: 7th October, 6pm)

• Launch by Senator Colette Kelleher of a report on workplace violence and its effect on residential disability social care workers, in partnership with Social Care Ireland. (Aula Maxima: 7^th October, 11am)

• World cafe with islanders, academics, politicians, policymakers and civil servants. about the future and sustainability of the West Cork islands (School of Psychology, North Mall Campus, 11^th October, 11am)

There are a number of tours, exhibitions and demonstrations taking place throughout the week, as well as events being run in partnership with HSE on Community Mental Health with GAA Healthy Clubs for sports organisations.
