This paper will discuss an ongoing project based on St Croix, former Danish West Indies, (current US Virgin Islands), which explores the various legacies of colonialism and neocolonialism on the island. The project was funded as an archaeology project by the Danish Independent Research Fund (1919-2024) but has evolved to focus on what we have framed as ‘underexplored heritages’ on the island as a means of forefronting community interests, activism and creative responses to their past and present circumstances as an enduringly colonized place.
