Information on the MSc in Biotechnology at UCC and on roles in Janssen Pharmaceutical

The third seminar, hosted by the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society, was held on Tuesday 10 November 2015 at 6.00 p.m.
The speakers were Professor Tommie McCarthy, Director MSc Biotechnology; Ms Claire Walsh, BioProcess Specialist, Cell Culture Operations at Janssen and Dr Nollaig Healy, BSc Medical Advisor, Janssen. The seminar was chaired by Dr Sinéad Kerins.

Dr Nollaig Healy
Nollaig Healy, who was one of the founders of the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society in 2006, and a BSc and PhD Biochemistry graduate, gave the audience an insight into how she secured a job in Pharma and her journey from PhD to Medical Scientific Liaison. Since 2014, Nollaig is a Janssen Medical Advisor for the European, Middle East and Africa region. Nollaig also provided first-rate advice on CV’s and interviews.
Professor Tommie McCarthy
Tommie McCarthy, the incoming Director of the MSc Biotechnology spoke about the high standards and excellent reputation the programme enjoys and gave credit to Dr Justin McCarthy for his excellent development of the programme over the last ten years. Professor McCarthy then provided the students with information about the structure and content of the programme and information on the application process and placement opportunities.
Claire Walsh

Claire Walsh is a BSc Biochemistry and MSc Biotechnology graduate and is currently a BioProcess Specialist in Cell Culture Operations at Janssen.
Claire discussed the MSc Biotechnology programme from a student’s perspective, her placement in Janssen and what it involved and her career profile to date. Claire was also very complimentary of the current MSc Biotechnology students on placement in Janssen.
