Biochemistry & Biotechnology Society hold work placement information seminar

The Fourth Year students who spoke to incoming Third Year students at the seminar about the Work Placement experiences they organised and secured for themselves during the summer recess

The Biochemistry & Biotechnology Society held a placement information seminar on Thursday 2nd November.

Fourth year Biochemistry students Molly Boyle, Hannah Daly, James Fields, Dylan Gregson, Elena Liutkute, Kyle Meiklejohn and Sarah O’Neill presented on their experience of completing placements during the Summer.

Elena Liutkute and Sarah O’Neill were recipients of the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Summer Bursary Studentship and conducted research projects under the supervision of Dr Paul Young.

Kyle Meiklejohn attained a place on the Amgen Scholars Programme www.amgenscholars.com  and Kyle discussed the research project he conducted in Cambridge under the supervision of Dr Betty Chung’s Department of Pathology.

James Fields obtained two placement opportunities in the food industry. Initially, James worked for 10-weeks in Dew Valley Foods Limited, Co Tipperary, as part of their Quality Control team. Subsequently, James conducted a 4-week internship with the Advanced Analytical Team in the R&D Department of Tirlán, Ballyragget.

Hannah Daly secured placement at Bluepoint Laboratories, Little Island, Cork. One of her roles was the procurement of medical products. Hannah was also involved in testing product quality before distribution.

Molly Boyle completed a three-month placement in Sanofi, Waterford. Molly worked in the Microbiology laboratories and enjoyed improving lab operations and generating the relevant documentation required for the audits that Sanofi complies with throughout the year.

Dylan Gregson secured a placement at Janssen Sciences Ireland, Ringaskiddy as a Student Manufacturing Process Specialist. Dylan worked in operations, specifically upstream cell culture.  Dylan really enjoyed the teamworking element of his role.

Dr Sinéad Kerins would like to thank Dylan, Elena, Hannah, Kyle, James, Molly and Sarah for their excellent presentations on their summer work placements and for providing the 3rd year students with very detailed information and advice.
