Confucius Institute at University College Cork Community Cultural Event Series Inaugural: Oriental Holistic Medicine Experience - Diagnoses, Treatment, and Practice

On November 9th, 2024, the UCC Confucius Institute launched its highly anticipated Community Cultural Series with the inaugural event, “Oriental Holistic Medicine Experience: Diagnoses, Treatment, and Practice”, at Cork City Library.

The event offered Cork residents an immersive opportunity to explore traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and its holistic approach to wellness. The opening speech by Dr. Shen Liang, Director of the UCC Confucius Institute, underscored the historical significance of TCM as an integral part of Chinese culture. He emphasized its holistic philosophy and the collective wisdom it represents, hoping to inspire a greater understanding of Oriental wellness principles among the Irish community.

A key highlight of the day was the participation of two distinguished TCM experts, Dr. Martin Fitzgerald (University of Westminster, London and Zhejiang University of TCM, Hangzhou, China) and Professor Ying Zhenhao (Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine). Together, they demonstrated a collaborative spirit of Sino-Irish exchange through their insightful presentations and practical consultations.

Participants experienced personalized TCM diagnostics, including pulse-taking and health consultations, leaving many in awe of TCM’s precision. The event also featured live demonstrations of acupuncture, cupping, and massage therapy, allowing attendees to engage directly with TCM practices and experience their restorative benefits, such as improved energy flow, relaxation, and balance.

Adding depth to the event, Dr. Martin Fitzgerald delivered an engaging lecture on the fundamentals of TCM, including herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and traditional practices such as Baduanjin. His interactive approach invited participants to experience moxa (mugwort used in cupping), providing a sensory connection to TCM’s natural and therapeutic principles.

The event received resounding praise from attendees, who appreciated the rare opportunity to experience authentic Chinese medicine in Ireland. “This event not only deepened my understanding of TCM but also inspired a deeper curiosity about Chinese culture as a whole,” shared one participant.

With plans for diverse cultural events, the UCC Confucius Institute continues to build bridges of understanding and friendship between Ireland and China, offering more opportunities for the local community to explore the richness of Chinese culture and fostering greater mutual understanding and cross-cultural dialogue.
