Confucius Institute (CI)
On February 15, 2024, UCC CI hosted a grand New Year celebration at Cork City Hall to mark the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Dragon.
This event was supported by various entities including the Chinese Embassy in Ireland, Cork City Council, Cork County Council and University College Cork, the event attracted nearly a thousand attendees, including overseas Chinese, international students, and local communities.
Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, Mayor of Cork City, Counsellor Yang Tong from the Chinese Embassy in Ireland, Cllr. Frank O'Flynn, Mayor of Cork County, Prof. Paul McSweeney, Vice President of University College Cork, and Dr. Huang Junyi, Director of the Confucius Institute at University College Cork, delivered New Year's speeches, extending their warmest and most sincere New Year wishes to everyone.
The evening featured vibrant performances, including a traditional Chinese instrumental ensemble, fan dances, "Riverdance," and the mesmerizing "Sichuan Opera Face-Changing." Artists from Chengdu brought the rich cultural heritage of Sichuan Opera to Ireland, captivating the audience with their skilled performances.
In addition to the performances, attendees enjoyed surprise activities such as sugar painting stalls and prize giveaways. The event also included the award ceremony for the "Ai Hua Cup" Chinese essay and painting competitions, promoting understanding of Chinese language and culture among Irish students.
Overall, the event was a successful celebration of the Chinese New Year, fostering cultural exchange and deepening friendship between the Chinese and Irish communities.
