Fascination of Plants Day 2022
Fascination of Plants Day is back and is happening this month - 18th May !
The sixth international “Fascination of Plants Day” will take place on May 18th 2022. This will be launched by Plant Scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). The aim of this day is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science research for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, climate, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals.
UCC will mark this day by having an open day in the School of Biological Earth and Environmental Science, North Mall Campus, Distillery Fields, Cork, showcasing the research that UCC Plant Scientists are engaged in. In addition, with support from the UCC Living Lab Project, the University Urban Farm Project will be launched. This is the first University Urban Farm in Europe using this type of technology. The Urban Farm is exploring the potential of vertical aeroponic technology (Tower Farms) for growing plants with a lower carbon footprint, using less water and a lot less land. The event will kick off at midday and will run until 5pm on 18th May on Distillery Fields site . We will also have Tomas Quigley, Beekeeper, on site talking to us about the honey being produced on the North Mall Campus. We are looking forward to welcoming all ages. No need to book this free event in advance.
The Fascination of Plants Day will culminate in an "An evening with the trees of UCC Arboretum". Take a stroll through this important collection taking in their history, beauty and vast benefits. Book your place on the tour at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/319712577927
