A team of students from health and social care professions in UCC has won the intervarsity All Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge for Students.

The All Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge (AIPEC) is a competition that provides an opportunity for students from all health and social care professions to work collaboratively to meet a challenge set around complex care issues.

The UCC team was announced as the winner at the final of the competition held on March 28th in Dublin.  The UCC team was selected at a local heat on March 12th.   MSW2 student Catherine Hegarty was on the winning team and another MSW student, Mila Zoric, competed on a team at the local heat stage.  Thank you to both students for representing the School of Applied Social Studies.

The event saw eight University teams (UCD, TCD, RCSI, UL, UG, UCC, QUB, UU) present their collaborative management plan for a complex case of a patient with heart failure admitted to hospital. The patient had a number of health, social and psychological needs. At the event, the presentations were reviewed by a panel of judges with expertise in cardiology and heart failure.

The team was made up of students from five programmes in the College of Medicine and Health and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences.  The students on the winning team were Catherine Hegarty (MSW), RĂona Bowen (Paramedicine), Margaret Quigley (Physiotherapy), Niamh Robertson (Graduate Entry Medicine) and Rachael O'Sullivan (Pharmacy).

The School of Applied Social Studies congratulates Catherine Hegarty who is a final year student on our Masters in Social Work (MSW) programme.   Well done to Catherine and her team mates!
