While Eleanor Rigby’s loneliness is portrayed by the onlooker and not be her, a very human story is created that contextualises loneliness within her biography, within a changing world. Similarly, through technology-identified loneliness, it is not the person that defines their own loneliness. But now, the human story is thinner; we know less about the world beyond the data used to create the models. This raises questions about the space to self-define experience, our capacity to empathise with experiences of loneliness, how we understand the sources of loneliness and thereby configure our responses. The webinar will explore these questions and consider their wider implications for social work practice.
