In this webinar, Dr Rachel Gartner will talk about building tools for queer and trans affirming social work practice
This introductory training supports social work practitioners in developing knowledge, confidence, and practical skills for queer- and trans-affirming practice. Participants will build foundational understanding of gender and sexuality, including key concepts and language relevant to working respectfully with queer and trans clients. The training will introduce practical strategies for communicating support, demonstrating affirmation, and creating more inclusive and responsive helping relationships. Participants will also explore common barriers to affirming practice, including personal assumptions, discomfort, gaps in knowledge, organizational policies and practices, and broader systemic challenges. We will use some of our discussion time to consider how these barriers can influence client experiences and identify strategies for responding to and countering them at both individual and organizational levels. The session emphasizes that affirming practice is an ongoing process of learning, reflection, and skill development. Participants will leave with practical tools and actionable approaches for creating safer, more affirming social work environments for queer and trans clients.
