The Wellcome - HRB ICAT Programme: Applications open on 25th of August

25 Jun 2020

The Health Research Board (HRB), the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI), and the Irish Clinical Academic Training programme (ICAT) come together to boost research careers amongst Ireland’s future academic clinicians.

With this initiative, clinicians in anaesthesiology, intensive care and / or pain medicine will soon have further opportunities to pursue careers as academic clinicians and gain valuable skills in combining clinical research with their clinical practice.

Dr Mairead O’Driscoll, Chief Executive Officer at the Health Research Board said,

‘We’re delighted to play our part in increasing the number of highly skilled clinician scientists who combine patient-focussed research with their clinical work. An objective of the HRB strategy is to develop more clinician scientists and academic leaders who can go on to play leading roles in Ireland’s healthcare delivery services’.

Professor George Shorten from the CAI stated,

’The CAI core responsibility is the training of anaesthesiologists, and academic clinicians form part of its professional community. The CAI is delighted with this opportunity to strengthen academic leadership within the specialty and to produce academic clinicians in the disciplines of anaesthesiology, intensive care medicine and pain medicine.’

Dr Michael Dennedy, NUI Galway, Director of the Wellcome-HRB Irish Clinical Academic Training programme (ICAT), added,

‘ICAT is a national training programme for clinician scientists across specialties.  With training hubs at six major Irish universities and their academic teaching hospitals, we provide an integrated programme spanning six to seven years of seamless, supported and mentored academic and clinical training for our future academic leaders.

This partnership might serve as a model for other training bodies to come on board to support expansion of the ICAT training programme to boost their own specialist discipline and underpin their own academic researcher training needs’.

Potential applicants should check https://icatprogramme.org/ for further details.

Applications for the 2021 intake will open on 25 August 2020.
