MyGug Arrives at UCC.

Four sustainability interventions are being trialed in UCC over 2025 with their pedagogical impact being measured. This is being conducted as part of the Eco2Schools as New European Bauhaus Labs project. One of those interventions is the installation of a biodigester at the North Mall campus.
A MyGug biodigester was installed in the North Mall greenhouse in November 2024. The MyGug ingests food leftovers and produces liquid fertilizer and biogas. Anything that can be eaten is suitable for disposal in the MyGug, but not garden waste or non-edible items like egg shells or raw meat. The liquid fertilizer will feed some beds at the BEES greenhouse and the UCC Community Garden. The biogas is collected and powers an adjacent cooking hob.
This project has received funding from the Eco2Schools as New European Bauhaus Labs project, being delivered by the Office of Sustainability and Climate Action, and vitally the biodigester was provided by MyGug for free. Knowledge item surveys will be conducted, with device users and the students/staff of the North Mall campus, to measure the intervention’s pedagogical impact.
Concurrently, Dr Barbara Doyle will also be recruiting a Master of Research student MRes student to study applications of the fertiliser, such as feeding other food plants grown in the hydroponic green towers. The green towers were previously experimented by UCC BEES and are also installed in the UCC Main Restaurant where lettuce is grown.
