UCC launches expanded PhD support programme

1 Apr 2026

University College Cork has introduced a comprehensive suite of enhanced supports for PhD researchers, reaffirming its commitment to excellence in doctoral education and researcher development.

This initiative encompasses a wide range of structured supports, including occupational therapist–led workshops, wellbeing modules, enhanced academic and creative writing supports, Irish language training, intellectual property education, and innovation and entrepreneurship modules.

The programme is designed to provide targeted supports at key stages of the PhD journey. For example, early-stage interventions focus on wellbeing and preparation for the demands of research. From the first year onward, tailored supports are also available for students with learning differences or specific challenges. These specific supports are developed and led by occupational therapy specialists, and focus on self-management, sustainable work practices, stress management, and cognitive strategies to enhance long-term research productivity.

Supporting student success is a central objective of UCC’s Strategic Plan (2023–2027).

Professor Stephen Byrne, Deputy President, noted: "The development of an integrated approach to PhD skills training represents a significant investment in the academic success, wellbeing, and professional development of our doctoral community."
