University College Cork is offering, gifted talented students scholarships worth up to €10,000 per student, per year.

The new scheme, The Quercus Talented Programme, offers both prospective and current UCC students the opportunity to apply for scholarships in a number of areas including academia, active citizenship, creative and performing arts, innovation/entrepreneurship and sport.

Programme Director, Prof. John O'Halloran emphasised that excellence underpinned everything they did at UCC.

"We recognise outstanding students when they join as well as those who develop their talents in University" he added.

“Quercus, the Latin for oak, is used as a symbolism in UCC - "from acorn to mighty oak" - to represent the growth and development of an individual that arises from nurturing talent through support, challenge and mentoring” concluded Prof. O’Halloran.

President of UCC, Dr. Michael Murphy said the Quercus announcement complemented and coincided with the Entrance Scholarships awards ceremony also being announced the same evening in Devere Hall.

"Education makes a fundamentally important contribution to the quality and well-being of society. At University College Cork, we believe in creating an environment in which academic excellence can be combined with opportunities for personal development and independent thinking" said Dr. Murphy.
