IGNITE Start-up Spotlight: Stephen Feeney and The Flourishing Man

“The real value of IGNITE is in the support you get to refine your thinking. You start with an idea, but it’s only through listening, testing, and being challenged that you start to see what it could really become.”

Not every founder starts with a tech background or a business plan. Some start with a classroom, years of observation, and a deep sense of purpose. Meet Stephen Feeney, founder of The Flourishing Man, a start-up focused on the emotional wellbeing of school-aged boys.
The Birth of The Flourishing Man
A primary school teacher since 2012, Stephen saw firsthand the growing challenges boys face—low self-esteem, emotional shutdown, difficulties communicating, and pressure to perform masculinity in unhealthy ways. Over the past five years, he’s immersed himself in the men’s wellbeing space, culminating in a Master’s degree in Applied Psychology (Coaching and Positive Psychology).
“I believe that equipping young men with the necessary skills to thrive and become better citizens in our society is so important,” Stephen says. “Positive psychology offers practical tools to support boys' personal development—and that’s what The Flourishing Man is about.”
Seeing the Need
Recent conversations sparked by the Netflix series Adolescence have only highlighted the urgency. “It’s opened up space for conversations that were once avoided,” Stephen says. But he adds a note of caution: "Calls to make it compulsory viewing slightly miss the point. We need a more structured and focused approach that fits schools’ real needs."
The Flourishing Man meets this need by offering pilot-ready programmes that schools can trial through after-school clubs or curriculum-aligned workshops. The longer-term ambition: a digital platform that makes these resources more accessible, scalable, and impactful.
Why IGNITE?
With a clear mission but a product still taking shape, IGNITE offered the structure and momentum Stephen needed.
“The structure and accountability have been really important for me,” he says. “Having dedicated time and support to focus on market validation, pilot development, and refining my message has helped me move far more quickly than I would have on my own.”
Trends Shaping the Future
Stephen sees a major shift in schools and youth organisations:
A demand for gender-responsive wellbeing programmes
Recognition that boys need tools to understand identity and manage online pressures
A push for early, preventative approaches—not reactive interventions
“There’s a growing appetite for this kind of work, but it needs to be practical and adaptable to real-world settings,” Stephen says.

Stephen’s Advice for Future IGNITE Participants
“Start with your idea, but be open to it evolving,” he says. “What you feel passionately about will be challenged—but that’s a good thing. It helps you get closer to something that can really work in the world.”
The Power of Confidence and Community
Stephen credits IGNITE not just with practical progress, but with a shift in mindset.
“It’s given me the confidence to use my initiative, make connections, and believe this is something I can build and lead,” he says.
Backed by a growing network and driven by a mission to create lasting change for boys and young men, The Flourishing Man is a start-up to watch.
