Programmes

You can study French at degree-level in the following programmes:

Each programme including French as a degree-level subject comprises two distinct elements within the French component:

  • core (compulsory) language modules (designed to develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills);
  • core and optional modules on French and Francophone culture and society (in which you can learn about French and Francophone society, politics and institutions; thought; literature; film; cultural studies; linguistics).

 All our programmes share these common objectives:

  • to enable you to further to develop your skills in the study and the use of the French language;
  • to offer you opportunities to deepen your skills in the close reading, analysis and discussion of complex textual material in French;
  • to give you a broad and deep sense of French culture and society, including the culture of Francophone (French-speaking) countries around the world.

 You will be offered opportunities to learn how to:

  • speak and write the French language with precision and confidence;
  • extend and deepen your knowledge and understanding of French and Francophone culture and society;
  • acquire advanced analytical, critical thinking and communication skills;
  • develop personal and interpersonal skills in small-group teaching: taking responsibility for the success of group work, developing reflectiveness, self-awareness and a capacity for co-operative endeavour.

Languages for All:

  • Students registered on other programmes at UCC can also take French language modules under the  Languages for All programme.
