Diploma in Dental Hygiene

Dental Hygiene
The Diploma in Dental Hygiene is a two year full time programme which entitles the holder to register with the Irish Dental Council and practice as a dental hygienist. This qualification is also recognised throughout Europe. Dental Hygienists are increasingly valued members of the oral healthcare team who work under the auspices of a dentist. The hygienist provides oral healthcare advice and procedures such as scaling, polishing, placement of fissure sealants, taking of radiographs and administering of local anaesthetic.
The diploma students study anatomy, histology, physiology, medicine and and pharmacology. The programme is delvivered in module format and for details of these see http://www.ucc.ie/academic/modules
Practical clinical teaching is delivered through the use of simulation units and by treating patients under supervision qualified, experienced hygienists and dentists. Theoretical teaching is delivered in combination with undergraduate dentists as well as small group teaching targeted specifically towards hygienists.
