It was experientially based and addressed the following topics: introduction to human dentition, patient management, cross-infection control, specialities in dentistry and dental materials.

One of the main objectives of this Dental Workshop was to promote an appreciation of what professional Dental Clinicians actually do by providing an opportunity to meet with a Dental Clinician who runs a busy practice and current students spoke about their undergraduate experiences.

The Dental Workshop was delivered by Dr Francis Burke, Dr Sharon Curtin (co-ordinator), Prof. Robert McConnell and Dr Noel Ray. Presentations were also made by Dr Gerald McKenna, Dr Cristiane de Mata, Ms Siobhan Shakeshaft, Dr Billy Waters, as well as undergraduate students, Peter Clune and Sally McCarthy.

Feedback on the workshop from the attendees was exceptionally positive and was found to be very interesting and informative. All attendees would recommend the workshop to a fellow student and helped informed their decision about choosing dentistry as a career.

Professor Finbarr Allen, Dean of the Dental School, stated that “the workshop provided an in-depth overview of dental programmes which may be of help to students in making important decisions regarding a career in dentistry”.

It is hoped to organise further workshops to cater for the interest in Dental undergraduate programmes at the University Dental School & Hospital, Cork.
