Professor Conor Gearty KC (Hon)

The Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Professor Conor Gearty KC (Hon). We send our condolences to his family and friends.
Professor Gearty was a graduate of University College Dublin and University of Cambridge, and a Professor of Human Rights at LSE Law School since 2002. In recognition of his accomplishments as a Barrister, he was appointed an honorary Queen’s Counsel in 2021. Professor Gearty also previously served as an external examiner to the School of Law at UCC and delivered the first Annual Distinguished Lecture at the formal launch of the CCJHR on 27 February 2007.
Professor Gearty was an exemplary scholar whose ability to transcend beyond traditional academic fields was one of his greatest talents. A leading expert on human rights, and a brilliant communicator, his voice will be sorely missed, particularly in the present climate.
