CCTV as a Crime Prevention Strategy: A Review of the Literature by Dorothy Appelbe, was launched by His Honour Judge Patrick J. Moran on Wednesday, 28th January 2009.
The report is the culmination of research funded by Allianz Ireland, Cork Chamber of Commerce and the Faculty of Law, University College, Cork. It examines the emergence of CCTV as a crime prevention strategy and the effectiveness it displays in this role. The report contemplates the strengths of CCTV as a crime prevention measure, such as the potential to deter would-be offenders, the effective deployment of police and security resources, the increased detection and successful investigation of crime, the reduction of fear in the community and the potential to encourage urban renewal. Concerns surrounding the use of CCTV are also addressed. These include the potential to displace rather than reduce crime, the need for proper regulation and the potential to encroach upon privacy rights. It is hoped that this work will prove useful to those contemplating the future deployment of CCTV as a crime prevention strategy.
