Chinese Irish businesswoman Eva Pau joined Professor Mark Poustie, Dean of the School of Law, in conversation on 20 March 2023 as part of the College’s continuing Women in Leadership series.

Eva Pau is Commercial Director of Asia Market, a successful family business established in 1981 by her parents Howard and Helen Pau. Asia Market has grown to become Ireland’s largest Asian food importer, distributor and retailer, employing over 160 multinational employees.

Raised in Dublin, Eva is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and Lancaster University and worked in finance in Hong Kong before returning to Ireland. She is currently Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Ireland, serves on the Advisory Council of The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies, and is an honorary member of the Chinese Trinity Alumni Committee.

Taking place in the Aula Maxima, the conversation covered such topics as the importance of heritage, work ethic, and industry. Challenges and opportunities presented by Covid 19 were also discussed, including ongoing supply problems as factories in Asia struggled to meet increasing demands for their products. The business’ range of fresh Asian vegetables and fruit are mainly sourced now in the EU. Vegetables grown by a Chinese woman and her Irish husband in North County Dublin are stocked as well.

The Pau family also own Duck, a food outlet located on Fade Street in Dublin, which specialises in Hong Kong-style barbecued duck, pork and chicken. Eva plans further expansion in this area.

CUBS Dean Professor Thia Hennessey introduced the speakers to the audience, which included Eva’s father Howard Pau.

Initiated by Professor Ursula Kilkelly, Head of College, the Women in Leadership series features conversations with female leaders about their impact and experiences. It hopes to inspire others on their paths to leadership.
