Eli Lilly Awards in Biochemistry and Biotechnology

The Eli Lilly Awards ceremony for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry and Biotechnology was held in-person on Wed 23rd March 2022.

The students who achieved the highest grades in the MSc Biotechnology programme and in the undergraduate Biochemistry programme were presented with their award by Dr Deirdre Buckley, Director of Biotech Technical service/Manufacturing Science, Eli Lilly and Mr Gary Kirby, HR, Eli Lilly.

The recipients of the awards were:

  • Michaela (Kayla) Crosbie — The Eli Lilly Postgraduate Award for Academic Excellence in Biotechnology
  • Donagh Gribbon — The Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry 3rd year
  • Fergal Cremin — The Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry 2nd year

Kayla graduated with a first-class honours degree in Nutritional Science and subsequently completed the MSc in Biotechnology programme. Kayla attained first-class honours in her MSc Dissertation entitled 'CRISPR-mediated depletion of rRNA from a Bacillus subtilis ribosome profiling library' and graduated with a first-class honours MSc Biotechnology degree. Kayla is now employed as a research associate with Ribomaps, UCC.

Donagh Gribbon received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in third year Biochemistry. In 2020, Donagh received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in second year Biochemistry. Donagh was awarded the title of College Scholar each academic year in recognition of his excellent examination results. Donagh was a recipient of a UCC Quercus Entrance Scholarship for 2018/2019. 

Fergal Cremin received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in second year Biochemistry. Fergal attended Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney and attained excellent results in the Leaving Certificate examinations. Fergal has a keen interest in climate change and is a member of the International Relations Society in UCC and have taken part in Model United Nations debates.
