Biochemistry Transition Year Programme- A Students Perspective

The Transition Year programme in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology is a very well-structured and organised programme. It showed us all the different aspects of the job that biochemists must do on a daily basis. The programme had great diversity from DNA testing to pH and buffer analysis.
Personally speaking doing the weeks’ worth of experience in the lab opened up my mind up to the world of biochemistry. Before that week if you had asked me would I like to work in a biochemistry lab, I would have said no but the whole experience really focused my mind to the possibility of it. It was a great opportunity to learn about biochemistry and make new friends.
Overall it was a fantastic experience which we all really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend the programme to any transition year student doing biology and/or chemistry for their leaving cert. However, you don’t need either of them to still enjoy yourself in the lab.

The Transition Year Programme at the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology
The School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology’s Transition Year (TY) programme was designed by Dr Sinéad Kerins and has run annually since 2005. The programme is in high demand by transition year students and gives students the opportunity to complete a wide variety of laboratory experiments and provides them with an insight into the research conducted in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
