The 16th "Chinese Bridge" World Chinese Language Competition for Secondary School Students in Ireland was held in Cork

Logan Bowdler Lennon from Waterford won the first prize in the 2023 "Chinese Bridge" Competition for Irish secondary school students

On 22 April 2023, the final of the 16th "Chinese Bridge"  Competition for Secondary School Students in Ireland, organised by the Chinese Embassy in Ireland and hosted by the Confucius Institute in Cork, was successfully held at the Kingsley Hotel in Cork City.

 

The competition was attended by Cllr. Derry Canty, representative of the Mayor of Cork City Council, Cllr. Frank O'Flynn, Deputy Mayor of Cork County, Ms. Lee Wah Pay, Head of the Economic Development and Tourism Department of Cork County Council, Ms. Zhu Xikun, First Secretary of the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland, Ms. Hu Yaodan, Third Secretary of the Cultural Section of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland, Mr Zhang Wei, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Dublin, Mr Li Ren, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Galway, Mr Du Tuo, representative of the Chairman of the Fota Group and Mr Zhang Qi of the Irish Branch of Xinhua News Agency. The judging panel consisted of Dr Chang Zhang from PPLI, Dr Ni Jun from Dublin Institute of Technology, Dr Guo Yan Yu from the Institute of Asian Studies at Cork University, Dr Jiang Ning from Trinity University, Ms Hu Mengwen from the Confucius Institute at Dublin University, Mr Zhao Yue from the Confucius Institute at Galway University and Ms Ma Xiaoling from the Confucius Institute in Cork.

On the day of the competition, more than 100 participants, their families and friends, and instructors attended the event. The competition was hosted by Chen Yuzhe from Christian Brothers College, Cork and Huang Manman from St Angela's College. 26 secondary school students competed in three sessions, including a written test, free speech and talent show, before 14-year-old secondary school student Logan Bowdler Lennon from Waterford was selected as the winner. Arinjay Mehrotra from Sutton Park School and Kristina Lui from Ballincollig Community School won second prize, and Andrew Rowe, Alisha Mohammed and Daniel Ryan won third prize Ava Gavin from Confey High School won the most Popular Wward based on the audience's votes.

The Chinese Bridge Competition not only provided a platform for Irish young learners to showcase themselves and inspire their enthusiasm for learning Chinese but also actively promoted the exchange of language and culture between China and Ireland.
