As Chair of the Consultant Medical Staff (2018-present) and part of the Executive Management Board of the SIVUH, I am directly involved in senior management decisions on patient care at SIVUH. As the Chairman of the SIVUH Department of Anaesthesia (2008-2017), I have contributed significantly to the development and ongoing innovation in anaesthesia related patient care at local, regional and national level. In the course of this timeframe various initiatives were undertaken such as the introduction of peripheral neural blockade, expansion of paediatric services and reconfiguration of regional elective surgical services. I am involved in producing national guidelines and developed a foundation curriculum for regional anaesthesia training for the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI). As Hospital Tutor for the CAI (2007-2015), I consolidated and developed an educational programme at SIVUH that meets the requirements of the Colleges’ curriculum. As 3rd Year Medical Student Tutor, I have contributed significantly to the undergraduate teaching programme for Anaesthesia at University College Cork.
I have a significant interest in supporting and developing research for both postgraduate doctors and medical students and supervise a number of research projects per year.
