Mapping the Future of Cancer Care in Ireland

Cancer research has already transformed outcomes for many patients—turning once life-limiting diagnoses into manageable conditions through advances in diagnosis, therapies, medicine, and more. Building on this progress, a new Cancer Research @UCC initiative aims to take a bold next step.

OncoBioMaps Ireland, led by Mark Tangney, is an ambitious research project designed to collect and analyse biological samples from cancer patients across the country. By mapping the unique characteristics of each patient’s cancer, researchers hope to help doctors deliver more personalised treatments—ensuring the right therapy reaches the right patient at the right time.

This kind of innovation depends not only on scientific expertise, but also on sustained support. To accelerate progress, Research Ireland is partnering with the project through a significant match funding initiative.

Philanthropic donations to Cancer Research @UCC in support of OncoBioMaps Ireland will be matched euro for euro, up to €250,000 per year over the next five years—effectively doubling the impact of every contribution.

This matched funding opportunity represents a powerful chance to accelerate breakthroughs in cancer research and deliver real change for patients and families across Ireland. By doubling the impact of donor support, it will help fast-track more personalised treatments, expand access to innovative research, and bring hope to people facing cancer now and in the future.

Finbarr

For people like Finbarr (pictured), a Cancer Research @UCC patient partner, work like this is life changing. After being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), he was able to access a treatment developed through years of research and is now in long-term remission.

“I can speak from firsthand experience of the value of cancer research… Donating to quality cancer research programmes is an amazing thing to do if you have the means to do it, it could save the life of someone you love.”

Collaborative efforts such as this—with the support of donors like you—are helping to drive the next generation of cancer breakthroughs in Ireland—bringing research closer to real-world impact for patients and families nationwide.
