UCC has been recognised several times this autumn for its digital and green credentials, attracting nominations from the Cork Digital Marketing Awards, SEAI, Web Awards, EirSpider Awards and Public Sector Magazine.

UCC is into the finals of the upcoming Cork Digital Marketing Awards and has also just been nominated in the Leadership category at the SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards 2015 (you can vote for UCC here). The news comes on foot of UCC’s recent finalist nominations at the forthcoming Web Awards and a nomination for GeorgeBoole.com at the Eir Spider Awards taking place later this month. UCC Library has also been recognised on the digital front, earning the title of 'Excellence in the provision of services for a digital library’ for the second year in a row from Public Sector Magazine.

Cork Digital Marketing Awards 2015

A previous finalist, UCC has again made the finals of the Cork Digital Marketing Awards. It has qualified in two categories - ‘Best use of Twitter for Business’ and ‘Best Website (Company with 20 employees or more)’. Recognising the work of UCC's Office of Marketing & Communications, IT Services, the Digital Estate Working Group (DEWG) and social media and web moderators across UCC, the winners will be announced at a gala dinner in the Fota Island Resort on 29 October. Click here for further details. Congratulations are also in order for Tyndall National Institute who appear in two categories.

Web Awards

UCC has also made the finals of the Realex Payments Web Awards 2015 in two categories - 'Most Influential Irish Website Ever' and 'Best Education and Third Level Website'. A previous finalist at the 2013 and 2014 Web Awards, the overall winners will be announced on 15 October. Further coverage on this can be found here.

UCC Green Campus recognised by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)

Already ranked 2nd in the UI World Green Metric University Rankings in 2014 and 2015, UCC’s student-led green credentials have again been recognised, this time by the SEAI’s Sustainable Energy Awards. UCC is shortlisted in the Leadership category in recognition of its excellence in energy management alongside six other organisations. A public vote open until 02 November will whittle this down to a final shortlist of three. You can vote for UCC here, with the ultimate winner announced at a gala event on 19 November.

UCC Library recognised by Public Sector Magazine for digital excellence

UCC Library has also been making waves on the digital front, having just won the ‘Excellence in the provision of services for a digital library’ category for a second year in a row at the Excellence in Business Awards organised by Public Sector Magazine. This award highlights the importance of meeting the information needs of all library users in the context of new digital technologies and online resources.

George Boole and the Eir Spiders

GeorgeBoole.com was successfully submitted by Granite Digital to the eLearning and Design category at the EirSpiders, with the final winners announced on 29 October.

The website is the perfect starting point to explore how UCC is planning to mark the bicentenary and legacy of George Boole. Born in Lincoln, Boole was a mathematical genius who was largely self-taught. His appointment as the first Professor of Mathematics at UCC in 1849 provided the opportunity to develop his most important work, An Investigation of the Laws of Thought. A pivotal figure often described as the ‘father of the information age’, his invention of Boolean algebra and symbolic logic pioneered a new mathematics.

Boole's legacy surrounds us everywhere, in the computers, information storage and retrieval, electronic circuits and controls that support life, learning and communications in the 21st century.
