Civilian Jane McCarthy

Civilian Jane McCarthy of Cork city (aged about 65), (Parnell Place, Cork city)

Date of incident: 22 Aug. 1923

Sources: CE, 24, 25 Aug. 1923.

Note: ‘Shortly after 6 o’clock on Wednesday evening [22 August 1923] a woman named Jane McCarthy was knocked down in the city by a military lorry. It appears that Miss McCarthy, who was staying at the Parnell Hotel, Parnell Place, was crossing the road near the hotel. The driver of the lorry, who was coming in the direction of Parnell Bridge, sounded his horn, but the woman evidently got so flustered that she could not stir and was knocked down. She was conveyed to the South Infirmary, where she died yesterday morning [23 August]. An inquest will be held to-day [24 August]. See CE, 24 Aug. 1923. Jane McCarthy was ‘an elderly woman’. See CE, 25 Aug. 1923.
