National Army Soldier Joseph Hudson (aged about 25) of 4 Denzille Lane (off Holles Street), Dublin (in or near Mitchelstown)
Date of incident: 24 Aug. 1922
Sources: Death Certificate (Fermoy District, Union of Fermoy), 1 Sept. 1922; Evening Herald, 5 Sept. 1922; CE, 6 Sept. 1922; FJ, 6 Sept. 1922; FSS Cork Civil War Deaths; MSPC/2D300 (Military Archives); http://www.irishmedals.ie/National-Army-Killed.php (accessed 3 July 2017).
Note: While serving with the Second Battalion of the Dublin Guards, Private Joseph Hudson was shot in the abdomen in or near Mitchelstown on 24 August 1922 and died of his wounds in Fermoy District Hospital on 1 September. See MSPC/2D300 (Military Archives). He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin on 5 September. See Evening Herald, 5 Sept. 1922; CE, 6 Sept. 1922; FJ, 6 Sept. 1922; FSS Cork Civil War Deaths.
Born in November 1897, he had been employed as a labourer before joining the National Army on 20 July 1922. His mother Annie Hudson received from army funds a weekly dependant’s allowance of 16s. from 20 July 1922 to 8 March 1924. She had been a widow for about six years in 1923 and Joseph Hudson was her only son. Her two married daughters did not contribute to her support, and a third daughter was ‘in delicate health’ and not working. Annie Hudson greatly missed the sum of £1 15s. that she had been given each week by her deceased son Joseph. She was eventually awarded a gratuity of £60—paid in twelve installments of £5. See MSPC/2D300.
