Note: A commercial traveler, Johnston was one of eight civilians who were killed or died of their wounds in the Upton train ambush on 15 February 1921. He died at Upton station of gunshot wounds. Johnston had been born in Cork city and was working there as a coal agent at the time of the 1911 census, when he and his family resided at 3 Glanmire Road (Middle). He and his wife Emily Maud had six children in 1911, including four co-resident daughters and one son ranging in age from 8 to 19 years old.
