Building Bridges with Recycled Wind-Turbine Blades
21 Feb 2022UCC researchers are behind the construction of a striking new 'blade bridge' that crosses the soon-to-be-opened greenway between Youghal and Midleton, Co. Cork. The bridge is just the second of its kind in the world. The blades used in the project were decommissioned from a wind farm in Belfast avoiding nearly 800 kilograms of CO2 emissions that would have occurred if steel girders had been used. Re-Wind, the research network that spearheaded the project, is a collaboration between the MaREI research centre, UCC, and partners in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United States.

Trained Farmer Status for UCC's Agricultural Science Graduates
10 Feb 2022Graduates of UCC's Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree can now add trained farmer status (also known as the ‘Green Cert’) to their qualifications. This is the basic agricultural qualification necessary to qualify as a Young Trained Farmer (YTF). On completion of a Green Cert course, students meet the requirements of a qualified farmer for the purposes of all Revenue and Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) schemes.

New website for UCC's Natural Collections
02 Feb 2022A new website showcasing UCC's natural collections has been designed to share these extraordinary specimens to a wider audience. The collections are housed within the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) and the digitised specimens form part of a vast zoological and geological collection, over 5,000 in total, used as teaching aids and displays to foster a love of learning and an appreciation for our extraordinary natural world.

UCC students donate laptops to students in direct provision
02 Feb 2022A group of enterprising engineering students from UCC’s Enactus Society have spearheaded an innovative campaign with Cork-based multinational Qualcomm Technologies to donate 13 laptops to students and parents in direct provision. The donation forms part of the Enactus Society’s ‘Ceangal’ project, which aims to improve the lives of residents in direct provision in Ireland.
