The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers List 2022 has been announced with a strong presence from College of Science, Engineering and Food Science researchers again this year. Congratulations to these academics who are in the top 1% of researchers in the world by citation - we are proud of your achievements.

A new UCC Sustainable Futures report entitled “The Sustainability Transformation: Assessing the Readiness of Irish Businesses” was commissioned by Microsoft Ireland to understand the level of business preparedness for a sustainable, net zero future and includes a national survey of 380 SMEs and larger enterprises across a range of sectors. The report was authored by Dr Marguerite Nyhan, School of Engineering and Architecture/ERI and Tanya Fitzgerald, Enterprise Liasion Officer, Sustainable Futures.

Dr Guangbo Hao, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Architecture, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), for his contribution to Design of Compliant Mechanisms and their Innovative Applications.

Congratulations to Presentation Secondary Mitchelstown students Avarose Moher, Ellalouise Burke, Orla Fogarty and Meadhbh Kenneally who were crowned winners of the “Appetite for Knowledge” science communication competition organised by the School of Food and Nurtirional Sciences, UCC.

Cork County Council and MaREI, the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine at University College Cork (UCC), have agreed a pioneering partnership that will see the entire coast of Cork assessed and mapped for coastal erosion.

Science Week took place from 13-20 November and featured lots of exciting events and activities involving our Schools and research centres here at the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science. Science Foundation Ireland supports Science Week nationally by providing a focused annual platform that stimulates, supports and creates awareness of science related activity developed to engage with the public.

UCC has presented RTÉ journalist, producer, and presenter Derek Mooney with an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Science in recognition of his immense contribution in the field of natural history broadcasting.

Our inaugural professorial lecture series returned for another academic year, with Professor Ruth Massey, SALI Professor for Microbiome & Health Sciences at University College Cork taking the stage for an engaging and informative event.  

Congratulations to UCC Physics graduate Professor Margaret Murnane on winning the 2022 Isaac Newton Medal and Prize, awarded by the Institute of Physics.
