Biography

 Current Activities

Jorge Oliveira is the Head of the School of Engineering and Architecture at UCC and a Professor in Process & Chemical Engineering. He is also active in industrial consultancy and is currently a member of the board of director of the Ernesto Morgado SA company in Portugal (rice milling and ready-meal manufacturer).

Career History

Jorge Oliveira was Teaching Assistant at the Catholic University of Portugal (College of Biotechnology) in Portugal between 1984 and 1989. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1989 and was Associate Professor from 1994 to 1998 at this Institution, as well as Head of Projects & Development of the Inter-University Institute of Macau in 1997-1998. He was a founding Partner of "Sociedade Portuguesa de InovaƧao, S.A." (Portuguese Society for Innovation, private consultancy company) and senior business consultant at this company. He has been with UCC since 1999, first as Visiting Professor at the Department of Food Science, Food Technology and Nutrition, University College Cork from 1999 to 2002, and then  as Senior Lecturer and Professor. He is Head of the School of Engineering and Architecture since January 2020. 

Research Interests

  • Product Design Engineering and Affective Product Design.
  • Kinetics of quality and safety factors in bioprocesses, including predictive shelf life modelling.

  • Process modelling and optimisation, including Taguchi analysis and Quality by Design.

  • Engineering methods for packaging design of perishable products.
