Eli Lilly and Company has been in business for over 140 years. The global, research-based company was founded in May 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the Midwestern section of the United States. Lilly has been in Ireland since 1978 and today employs around 1,300 people, with an additional 500 outsourced & contract staff involved in the provision of day-to-day support services for the company’s operations here.
Eli Lilly have sponsored the 'Eli Lilly Awards for Excellence in Process & Chemical Engineering' at UCC from the Academic Year 2006-2007. The Award, which consists of a specially minted medal and a cash prize sponsored by Lilly, is made annually to students from each of the four years in Process & Chemical Engineering at UCC on the basis of academic excellence (70%) and contribution to department (30%). The students are nominated by their class, and then chosen by staff on the basis of the selection criteria. Given that the awards are made to a different student each year, students may have up to four chances to enter the Lilly Hall of Fame.

The 2021-22 Eli Lilly Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Process & Chemical Engineering.

• Aiden Sheehan  5th Year

The award is based on Aiden’s overall academic ability and his very positive engagement with the discipline throughout his 5 years in Process & Chemical Engineering. Particular mention was made of his leadership role in the Engineering Society and specifically his activity to organise the 2021- 22 Engineering Ball as the most significant post pandemic social gathering for all engineering students. The importance of this activity needs to be viewed in the context of promoting a much needed return to social normality for our students who have faced many significant challenges throughout the pandemic, not least of which was social isolation and the mental stress that can place on all students but in particular the more vulnerable. In organising the Engineering Ball 2022, Aiden helped all engineering students (not just Process & Chemical) to come together, celebrate their common engineering bonds, their precious and relatively short time in UCC and hopefully for the younger students to find new friends to help and support them throughout the remainder of their studies.
